Embracer Group will acquire The Lord of the Rings, Hobbit and Tolkien IP

In a sudden explosion late at night, it was announced that Embracer Group had entered into an agreement to acquire IPs for The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. Of course, The Lord of the Rings is one of the biggest media franchises of all time, thanks to the JRR Tolkien novels. The books are some of the most popular and well-known works of literature, and eventually gave birth to the Academy Award-winning film franchise directed by Peter Jackson. Many video games, movies, books, and other forms of media have helped contribute to the world that Tolkein created and is now just getting a little bigger. This news comes ahead of Amazon’s new TV show THe Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.

The Embracer Group has entered into an agreement to acquire The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit from Saul Zaentz, franchisees since 1976. This makes this deal somewhat historic given that the company was responsible for all the official adaptations of the series and they are now handing it over to Embracer Group. It’s unclear how much money will be spent to get this IP address, but it certainly can’t be cheap.

“I am really excited to have The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, one of the world’s most epic fantasy franchises, joining the Embracer family, opening up even more opportunities for Transmedia including synergies across our global group,” said Lars Wingfors, founder and CEO of the group. . Embracer Group. “I am pleased to see what lies ahead for this IP address with Freemode and Asmodee as a start within the group. Moving forward, we also look forward to collaborating with both existing and new external licensees for an increasingly robust IP portfolio.”

As of now, it is not clear what the Embracer group plans to do with the IP. The new ownership could mean a lot of different things, especially if it prepares for the return of The Lord of the Rings to the height of its popularity thanks to the new Amazon series. Either way, it looks like we can expect new games and other projects. It remains to be seen if new movies come out any time soon, but this is a major bombshell for the entire entertainment industry. The Embracer Group also recently acquired a group of Western Square Enix teams, such as Crystal Dynamics.
